Port Washington-based Douglas & James Homemade Ice Cream, also known as Sweet Treats on the Wharf and located at 405 Main Street, makes the greatest ice cream around, according to the 2024 Bethpage Best of Long Island results.

Winning the title of “Best Ice Cream on Long Island” for the sixth year in a row and entering its thirtieth year in business, Douglas & James’ reputation may precede it.

With homemade ice cream, milkshakes, and a myriad of toppings, the creamery has built its brand on providing exceptional frozen treats to Long Islanders each season.

“There are so many ice cream places in Long Island, so far Douglas & James is the best ice cream around there,” wrote Rosa K, who is from Queens, on Yelp.

“So delicious with lots of great flavors.”

Koko B, a Yelp reviewer from New York City, echoed the sentiments, writing that Douglas & James’ has the “BEST ICE CREAM EVER.”

“The ice cream is creamy and has a great texture. The flavors are actually good and nothing too crazy and gross,” she said, adding that she received a good amount of ice cream for what she paid and that the ambiance of the store was nice.

In the nearly 15 years that the creamery has had a Yelp page, it has amassed a whopping 4.5-star rating, proving that the best treats in life are handmade with love.

With all of the classic flavors ice cream lovers expect, a mix of unique creations (like coffee toffee or black raspberry with dark chocolate chunks), sorbets, and vegan varieties, there is truly something for everyone.

After having a scoop each of the mint Oreo and double Dutch fudge brownie flavors, Fresh Meadows resident Daniel B said on Yelp, “Both were incredible, with amazing creaminess and huge chunks of Oreo, brownies, etc. mixed into the ice cream.”

“Delicious ice cream - up there with the best I've had…Will definitely be back to try more of these flavors!”

Douglas & James Sweet Treats on the Wharf is open seasonally. More information can be found on its Facebook page here or its Instagram page here.
